Summer News From The Hawking Centre Summer News From The Hawking Centre

The weather has been scorching, and as the summer of shows draws to a close, it feels like The Hawking Centre team has been everywhere! Our three days at the Kent Show in July were as much fun as ever, where we hosted the Countryside Arena and enjoyed the company of great visitors and some wonderful people giving demonstrations, including gun dog training and duck herding. The birds flew brilliantly and we combined hawks and terriers in a race-off as part of our terrier racing team event. Which do you think was fastest?

Another great part of summer for us is always our new arrivals, a time when spring babies have grown enough to fledge and become part of the team. We're so excited to welcome some new characters this year...Rudi, a Siberian Eagle Owl, and Matilda, a Red legged Seriema, who as a snake catching bird has the most amazing natural behaviour which we can't wait to show you in our demonstrations. New falcons include both Eurasian and American Kestrels, and a stunning Gyr-Merlin. Come and see us soon to meet them all, and hopefully the Seriema will call to you – one of the strangest bird noises you’ll ever come across!

Our support of Vulpro has been developing too through this year, with plans now well underway to send Kate and Jules, two members of our team, to Pretoria in South Africa next January, to give practical help in the field and hands on conservation. Our vulture support bracelets are raising money already, and our birds of prey info booklet will soon be ready to go on sale, also in support of this amazing charity. We’ll be keeping you updated on Kate And Jules and their epic visit to South Africa, and sharing more exciting ways to show support this vital conservation initiative, including a charity dinner next year! If you have any suggestions or ideas you’d like to see us take on, why not drop us a line…?
